At times, a bite problem may not just involve the malpositioning of the teeth, but it may be due to unmatched jaw sizes contributing to an overall underbite, overbite or open bite. Malpositioning of the upper and lower jaws may be due to heredity, past trauma or growth impediments. Corrective jaw surgery helps to realign the upper and lower jawbones to allow your orthodontist to correctly reposition your teeth for the most ideal and stable bite treatment. Unequal and mismatched jaw growth is the common cause of such problems, and corrective jaw surgery can readjust the jaw proportions. There is typically an initial phase of orthodontic treatment to line up the teeth in preparation for jaw surgery, and the goal of surgery is to correct the bite and improve jaw function and facial symmetry as a result. Abnormalities involving the upper face, cheekbones, nose and chin can also be surgically corrected at the same time to achieve overall facial balance. These corrections can often lead to more normalized breathing, eating and speaking capabilities.
Corrective jaw surgeries today can usually be performed without "wiring the jaw shut," using plates and screws to hold the jaws in their new positions. There is typically a final phase of orthodontics to finish treatment. Surgery would take place in a hospital setting and usually involves a 1-2 day hospital stay. All incisions are usually hidden inside the mouth, and recovery to the point of returning to routine daily activity occurs in about two weeks.
If you have reason to believe your teeth do not meet properly and that your jaws may not be correctly formed or positioned, an office visit and consultation will quickly determine whether corrective jaw surgery may be the treatment necessary to help you with your bite problem.
