For routine procedures: Over the counter medications such Extra Strength Tylenol, Advil or Motrin is adequate for pain control. You can use 2 tablets every 6 hours as needed for pain. You should start taking these medications before the novacaine starts to wear off so that your mouth is as comfortable as possible. If you find you need pain medication for more than 2-3 days, you should contact our office for re-evaluation of your treatment area.

For impacted wisdom teeth procedures and other extensive surgical treatments: Antibiotics, a prescription anti-inflammatory and a back-up narcotic pain medication are usually given. Once the gauze is removed and you have had something cold to drink, we recommend that you start with the antibiotic and the anti-inflammatory. The antibiotic should be finished as prescribed and the anti-inflammatory ibuprofen should be taken 3 times daily (morning, afternoon and evening) to help minimize swelling and provide an initial level of pain control. If you need the back-up narcotic pain medication, that can be used every 4-6 hours, but only if needed. Do not take the anti-inflammatory and the narcotic together, rather space these two medications in between one another. After 3-4 days, if your swelling and pain levels are not improving, contact our office for an evaluation for possible delayed healing.

If you need to premedicate with an antibiotic prior to dental or surgical treatment, please call the office in advance so that we can call in a prescription for you. These antibiotics should be taken 1 hour prior to your visit in our office.
