Root Canal Treatment

A root canal is a procedure that removes decayed nerve tissue from the central part of the tooth, re-shapes the canal and replaces it with strengthening filler.

A cavity is the result of superficial decay of the enamel of the tooth. Left long enough, this decay can burrow into the deeper reaches of the tooth, causing extensive damage to tooth structure. When the damage goes beyond what can be treated with a filling, dentists can perform a root canal, preserving the tooth and retaining its original integrity. This saves a tooth which would otherwise have to be removed.

Procedure
Under local anesthesia, a dental dam is placed to isolate the tooth requiring root canal treatment. The tooth is opened to allow for removal of infected or dead nerve tissue. The tooth is thoroughly cleaned and with special instruments, the doctor re-shapes the nerve canal. The tooth is filled again with biocompatible filling materials, and a temporary filling is placed to cover the access opening in the tooth. After root canal treatment, it is common to need to have a post and core build-up of the tooth and a crown restoration.
