When Do You Need A Tooth Extracted?

A tooth extraction is a dental procedure that involves the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. It’s typically required when a tooth is damaged beyond repair or is causing significant pain or health issues.

It is a common procedure that is performed for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Severe tooth decay or damage: Tooth decay that has reached the pulp (the inner chamber of the tooth) or has caused significant damage to the tooth structure may necessitate extraction.
  • Impacted teeth: Teeth that are trapped under the gum line or are unable to erupt properly may need to be extracted.
  • Gum disease: In severe cases of gum disease, teeth may become loose and need to be extracted.
  • Orthodontic treatment: To make room for other teeth to move into their proper positions, some teeth may need to be extracted.
  • Preparation for other dental procedures, such as dental implants.

Types of tooth extractions

There are two main types of tooth extractions:

  • Simple extraction: This type of extraction is performed on teeth that are visible above the gum line. The tooth is loosened with an instrument and then removed with forceps.
  • Surgical extraction: This type of extraction is performed on teeth that are not visible above the gum line or that are impacted. The gum tissue may need to be cut away to access the tooth, and bone may need to be removed in some cases.

What to expect during a tooth extraction

Before your tooth extraction, your oral surgeon will review your medical history and discuss the procedure with you. They will also administer local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth.

During the extraction, your oral surgeon will use instruments to loosen the tooth and remove it from its socket. They will then clean the area and close the gum tissue with stitches if necessary.

After your tooth extraction, you will be given instructions on how to care for the extraction site. It is important to follow these instructions carefully to avoid infection and promote healing.

Recovery from a tooth extraction

Most people experience mild pain and swelling after a tooth extraction. This can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. You may also experience some bleeding, which is normal.

It is important to avoid strenuous activity for a few days after your extraction. You should also avoid eating hard or crunchy foods.

Your oral surgeon will see you for a follow-up appointment to check on your healing and remove any stitches.
